Hiplife Battles: Kwaw Kesse Vs Asem

As Ghana’s hiplife music continues to pick up more traits from American hiphop, battles amongst hiplife artists is increasingly becoming common. The never shy of controversy, Kwaw Kesse has taken a jab at fellow hiplife artist, Asem for what he perceives as an attack on him. Asked by Yaw Sakyi, the host of the Rundown on TV Africa whether he (Kwaw) has any beef with Asem, Kwaw replied in the affirmative adding that as a ‘general’ he could tell when a missile was directed at him.

Kwaw says that one of Asem’s lines in Tinny’s ‘Ringtone Remix’, was a direct attack on a line from one of his hit songs. Originally Kwaw’s lyrics was “mu na mu de baa ye, na ye ye no hit” (you brought it but we made it into a hit) but Asem twisted it to say, “yen na ye de baa ye no mu be yer no shit” (we brought it and you turned it into shit).

Kwaw went on to suggest that he didn’t understand why a ‘small boy’ like Asem would want to attack him in such a manner, adding that he has a reply on his upcoming album, ‘Give Way (Ma Kwan)’ for Asem. He also described Asem as someone who moves from one nightclub to another feeling like a star because some few people come up to him in the nightclubs to make him feel as such. Asem was not the only person to receive the grunt of the ‘Mad man’, Kwaw also belittled his seeming beef with Konfi by saying that, “Konfi made as song saying they want to be like me”.
