About Hiplife

It all started with Highlife; a type of music played mostly in Ghana and Nigeria, and one of the first fusions of African roots and Western music. Highlife blends the sounds eminating from a guitar, Trinidadian calypso, military brass-band, and even American swing.

Over the years however, highlife music has morphed into a new sensation sweeping not only West Africa, but the entire continent of Africa. This unique sound called Hiplife is also known as Kapuka, Genge, Bongo Flava, Naija Gbedu and Coupe decale in Francophone Africa. Other commonly used terms are Afro pop and Afro hip-hop.

Fused into Hiplife as well is Western music consisting of a blend of hip-hop, reggae, garage and pop beats.

Music in Africa is used as a celebration of a new harvest, death, marriage, birth, the weather and many other cultural markers. This music called Hiplife celebrates the youth and youth culture.

Hiplife.com is dedicated to representing and supporting this Hiplife movement using the internet as a platform. Let’s celebrate our youth. Hiplife is a way of life, Our way of life.
